Gabriele M. Barthlen, MD, PhD

Dr. Gabriele M. Barthlen, a German native, is ABMS board certified in both Sleep Medicine and Neurology. During her academic career, she directed sleep centers at prestigious institutions such as New York Hospital (Cornell) and Mount Sinai in New York City, as well as at Freiburg and Munich Universities in Germany. She has published widely resulting in 3 books, 15 peer reviewed articles, 33 scientific abstracts, and over 250 invited lectures. She has dedicated 20 years of her professional career to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders, and excels in sleep study interpretations. She has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1988, and is currently President of the Hawaii Sleep Society. Dr. Barthlen was also elected to “America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumers Research Council of America in 2004 and again in 2010.

Ford Shippey, MD

Dr. Ford Shippey, a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School, came to Hawaii in 2003 to complete his residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Hawaii.  He has been board certified in both fields since 2008.  He began working at Sleep Center Hawaii in 2008, and is dedicated to the field of sleep medicine. Dr. Shippey plans to take the sleep medicine certification boards in the Fall of 2011.  He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society.  He has been a teaching attending for inpatient Internal Medicine Physicians since 2008, giving frequent lectures on Internal Medicine and Sleep Medicine topics.  Dr. Shippey has a passion for raising awareness of sleep disorders in children, and is the only pediatric trained Sleep Physician in Hawaii.  He travels around the state giving lectures to Pediatricians and other Physicians on pediatric sleep apnea and other sleep related topics.
